Gomez was born and raised in Belalcázar, a municipality in the Colombian department of Caldas. When she was growing up, Gomez dreamed of becoming a model. She says, she initially intended to study agronomy at university, but changed to veterinary medicine after being told that agronomists were "impoverished, dirty and brutish." She further explained that she could not also study the aforementioned course because, "I was told that I had to sacrifice an animal if it got badly injured. I retired. I am one of those who do not kill a fly."
